Wow! A bunch of finishes

I imported an image of the fabric into Embird and using the Studio Plugin I created this snowman.   I had a few difficulties when I embroidered him as some fabric got caught on the needle and tore.... wondering what I could do to solve my problem, I decided he needed to be on the snowbank to hid the small holes below the right foot....

When I got home from dance classes with the girls tonight, I gave it to my 9yo.... and got a great big smile and some wonderful hugs.

I've been testing the Holland Road Pattern for Sara @ Sew Sweetness.   You can see lots of other bags of hers in her Flickr group.
Like all her other patterns this went together easily and had great photos and instructions.  I did add the zippered pocket as I thought this particular bag needed one.  It will be donated to the RMM Pipeband's Silent Auction Fundraiser at our Robbie Burns dinner.

My 11yos dance teacher is dancing at a Christmas Dance performance and needed a new costume. She asked if I could sew her one. We traded, my sewing for lessons for my 11yo. I made her the black bodysuit, red glitter sparkle (on black) skirt and a cummerbund.

FNSI - My daughters sewing

FNSI started with my daughter sewing a bag for a friends birthday present. She is getting much better with sewing, she still doesn't like cutting things with the rotary cutter, and would rather I pinned everything. She also is scared of sewing over zippers.

Virtual Sewing Retreat - Day 3

Well I didn't get as much time to sew Thursdayas I had other "chores" that needed doing today. After my run this morning, I managed to get a bit of sewing in before I went out for lunch with my grandmother. Then no sewing again until the kids were in bed.


Its Friday again, and I am just finishing up the baby quilt. My sister-in-law had a little girl early this morning, and I'm finishing the quilt label now.

Tonight I started and finished (ok it still needs the drawstring) a drawstring swim bag as a birthday gift. The bag is lined with ProCare, a water proof fabric, that is used in diaper covers, wet bags and sheets for babies, left over from my diaper making days.

I also made up a sample of the quilt fabrics. Its a little scrappy quilt, that I made the top for and quilted today. I used some store bought bias tape that was in my stash. It has become a dolly quilt, to match the yet to be quilted birthday present. The top has been quilted with 4 different colours... I actually like the pink, yellow and green quilting lines, much better than the blue. The blue wasn't a perfect match, but I liked the bright colours. I will definitely need to pick up more thread to do the whole quilt top!!!

And I practised some free motion quilting. I found a project I started at a sewing show, but never had a chance to finish. Today I did some of the quilting, before I tired out...

I am still not 100% happy with my stitches, they really vary in length... but I am working on it, and practising. I don't know if I would free motion a large quilt, but I will finish this project with free motion.

I have made a couple of gift bags recently. I forgot to get a photo of the one I made a week ago - another drawstring bag with a wind surfer embroidery on it. It used up some fabric I had that had foxes windsurfing on it.



This weekend I made up a small felt bag to hold a book for another friend's birthday gift.




I have been trying to do some other digitizing too and have been doing the Digital Challenge lessons from Viv at Oregon Patch Works Digi Challenge. I completed this months designs! First in a long time... This month we worked on fringe! It was a little scary cutting the bobbin thread the first time... and yes my top thread came off too... oops it didn't catch the stitches. The second worked much better.



Last week before we completed our family 5K run, under rainy skies, I decided that my daughter needed a pair of rain pants. I had some fabric - and grabbed out an Ottobre and an hour later I had a pair of rain pants for her... Ottobre 06/09 #39 - only a few modification was I lowered the CF a little, and shortened to the correct length for my daughters short legs and added elastic at the ankles!

New Year's Day -- Sewing and Crafting

My Sewing
I finished last year making a pair of panties for me -- from Ottobre 05/08 #2B and even wore them last night, in Chicosante interlock. The fit is good - but I will be changing it slightly for my preference... I'd prefer a higher waistband, so I will be adding another inch to the top... As for the instructions - I don't know what they were like -- I didn't read them ;)

Last night I also started a tshirt for my husband - and finished it today... out of Chicoante interlock using Pattern KwikSew 2881.

A couple of grocery bags....
These were made by my son, on the new sewing machine, and my serger... they are for two birthday gifts we have this week. Fabric is from a UFO (not mine...) that was cut out but not sewn - so these "green" bags are also using up stash fabrics. One of the bags has a butterfly done in needle punch - a new tool given to the girls from Gramma -- and they even shared with their brother!

My youngest had two more birthday parties right before Christmas....

So these are getting quite simple to make - but it would be easier if I wrote down the sizes I used for each one. I kinda make them up as I go along, depending on what fits the fabric I'm working with. These fabrics are from my stash and have been cut into before... The fuchsia twill is now all gone! YEAH!!!

A quick gift

My daughter has had a student teacher for the past 3 months, and is just finishing up this week. Today we made her a drawstring bag, out of denim (old jeans) and a pocket made from a test stitch-out from a teacher's gift I made in June.



Tonight I made a list of sewing for Christmas and upcoming birthdays.... I started organizing fabrics & patterns. Still a few more patterns to trace, tomorrow I home to cut out some items....

Vest Complete and other sewing

The vest is complete... sorry no photos yet. It is in the laundry room drying/cooling from being steamed. Wish I could steam it on her :) I'm sure it would shape up faster.

Other sewing was for a laptop bag for the kids new computer. Before Christmas we ordered them a laptop from the One Laptop per Child which arrived a few weeks ago. My sons immediate request was for a laptop bag for their computer.

Its made with some black denim with smiley faces, lined with green broadcloth and interfaced with some fleece and canvas. It has a pocket on the inside for the mouse and power cord. My son helped sew the pocket...


Since she wouldn't wear these as shorts that were made for under her easter dress, I added a skirt to them - A new skort!
